Appearance
- Dark brown or gray in color, possibly with a red hue and pale bars on sides
- Triangle-shaped vomerine tooth patch
- Thick, heavy lips Strong canine teeth found in both jaws, one pair visible when mouth closed
Habitat
Coastal waters near structure. Juveniles found in estuarine areas.
Behavior
Among largest snapper species. Not common. Feed on fishes and larger crustaceans. Spawning occurs in the late summer in the Keys.
