Appearance
  • Dark olive color on back
  • Tan to silver on sides, often with a metallic sheen
  • Black stripe along center of each scale row, except toward belly
  • Anal fins sometimes dark orange
  • Three anal spines
  • Dorsal and anal spines long and stout
  • Pelvic spine and first two anal spines are pale
Habitat
Brackish and coastal waters (in limestone regions) and seagrass beds
Behavior
Form dense schools and tolerate a wide range of salinities.
